The accreditation community worldwide celebrates the World Accreditation Day on 9th June annually. World Accreditation Day (WAD) 2018 highlights on how accreditation delivers a safer world.
Across the globe, we share the sentiment that the environment where we work, food that we consume and service that we acquired such as internet banking are safe. But the reality is far from the expectations as shown by the statistics. Around the world, approximately 2.78 million fatal cases resulted from occupational incidents are reported per year. In Malaysia, Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) investigated 3,246 work-related incidents and 206 incidents resulted in death for 2017 alone (Source: DOSH Portal).
Standards, conformity assessment and accreditation are well established and accepted tools that are used to help deliver a safer world. Government and regulatory bodies can set the policies and technical regulations for services and products placed in the market as well those related to workplace. Accredited conformity assessment bodies assist in verifying the compliance to the requirements set by the authorities. Newly published standard such ISO 45001 – Occupational health and safety provides the businesses improve its ability to respond to regulatory compliance issues, reduce disruption costs, and reduce the cost of insurance premium.
